The Heart of Documentary Filming: Cracks in the System

Working as a photographer on the documentary “Cracks in the System” reminded me once again why I love this process — capturing real people, real stories, and emotions that stay with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Maria Poleshchuk on today’s Northcott shoot, and I can confidently say she is one incredible BTS gun. It was her very first time on set with the Albion Lane Productions crew, yet she blended in seamlessly capturing raw, intimate moments with both sensitivity and skill. Maria has a natural eye for storytelling, bringing warmth and authenticity to every frame. Beyond her talent, she brought great energy and professionalism to the day, which made the entire team stronger. I’m truly grateful for her work and highly recommend her to any production.

This time, the filming took place at Northcott Community Centre as part of the documentary Cracks in the System. It was one of the most powerful stages — the interviews. Four residents opened their lives to us, sharing deeply personal and emotional stories. It is impossible to remain untouched when listening to voices so sincere, filled with both pain and hope.

Work on a film, even a documentary, is always a long journey. It requires patience, dedication, and a genuine commitment from the whole team. But this process is what makes it meaningful: every small detail contributes to creating a whole story where the voices of people can be truly heard.

I feel grateful to be part of a team of like-minded people, equally passionate about what they do. Each of us brings a piece of ourselves to the project, and together we create something much bigger than just a film.

I look forward to the release of the documentary. For me, this experience was filled with meaning, emotions, and the presence of real human stories.
